We’ve spent the last five years traveling in Michigan, visiting many, many amazing campgrounds. We camp in Michigan’s State Park campgrounds a lot because they really are the most beautiful places to stay. We set a goal last year to visit ALL of the state parks. We’ve visited 20 to date and hope to add more this year. Here are a few of our favorites:
Located in Northern Michigan, Harrisville State Park offers shady campsites and beautiful views of Lake Huron. If you plan ahead, you can book a campsite right on the lake! Our kids love rock hunting and playing in the sand. This campground is a place where you can truly relax and disconnect from the craziness of life.
Mears State Park is located in Pentwater, Michigan. The campsites are TIGHT and require some real patience to maneuver but it’s totally worth it when you’re settled. The campground is located right on the shores of Lake Michigan with sugar sand beach. If you’ve never visited a Lake Michigan beach you’re missing out on a real treat! Sinking your toes in the sand at the campfire each night feels amazing. The campground is also within walking distance (even with three kids in tow!) of downtown Pentwater which offers adorable shops and several ice cream options!
PJ Hoffmaster State Park is located in Muskgon, Michigan. The campground features tall trees and sandy creek that runs into Lake Michigan. If you’re feeling adventurous you can take the trail leading to a gorgeous Lake Michigan beach. We love camping right on the creek. It is a really unique feature because of the clean water and sandy bottom – great for kids and adults to explore.
